Although the cover states that this album was "recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival", only 2 of the 10 tracks were recorded at the concert. The other 8 were recorded in the studio.

Tracks A1 and B4 were recorded at the Evening concert, Freebody Park, Newport, RI on July 3, 1958.

Tracks A2 to B3 and B5 were recorded at Columbia Studio, 207 E.30th St. in New York, NY on July 21, 1958. Applause was dubbed in to recreate the Newport event.
