Those of you familiar with previous releases in the INSTANT PRODUCTION MUSIC series will already be acquainted with the music of Herb Pilhofer, since it was his music which comprised Volume 3. I'm sure that many of you are also aware that Herb has contributed many original scores for use in EARPLAY drama productions. It is from this EARPLAY music that we have chosen to release another Pilhofer record.

Herb is an accomplished composer, arranger and producer. He is well qualified to write special music for drama. In 1962 he was selected to be Music Director of the new Tyrone Guthrie Theatre, which was to open in 1963. In that capacity Pilhofer has composed incidental music and complete scores for more than 12 productions over the past seven years, including music for Bertolt Brecht's CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE and ARTURO UI, and Shakespeare's RICHARD III, HAMLET, and JULIUS CAESAR. In addition to his long list of drama credits, Herb is much in demand writing commercial music and has recently had a major album release on Good Sound Records titled OLYMPUS ONE.

We've chosen not to tell you which EARPLAY productions used the music on this record. We think you should listen to the material without associating it with any particular drama. We've chosen to list the productions as A, B and C. Actually the music listed as production C is from two dramas. But as the two dramas were thematically related, so is the music, enough so that it can be considered as one production unit.

The cues from productions A and B are also thematically related, but here the instrumentation changes radically enough, the harmonica being the lead instrument in production A and the alto sax the lead instrument in production B, that we have chosen to list them separately.

Please try not to think of this music for use in drama production only. With a little imagination you should find use for this material in a variety of forms of radio and television production. Herb Pilhofer is on extremely talented writer and his music on this record is exclusively yours to use in public broadcasting.
