Forget Your Name was written and recorded after Matthew McGarry mysteriously lost all of the hearing in his left ear due to something called sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). Despite the prognosis of possibly not getting any of his hearing back, it miraculously returned after 10 days of total left-ear deafness. Because there was a point in which he didn’t think he'd be able to enjoy music ever again, the logical thing to do once he regained his hearing was to record an album celebrating sound and how good music can make people feel.
