LINER NOTES:

FOR THREE DECADES, TIME STOOD STILL FOR THE VEIL

In 2018, I bought more than a hundred dusty, old cassette tapes from a Chicago thrift store for seven cents apiece. Within the bunch, I found amateur tapes by a band I’d never heard of nor could find anywhere online. That band was The Veil. After listening to the cassettes, I fell in love with the music and decided to track down the band’s cofounder, David Thomas, and make this record.

The Veil was created in 1986 by Lorna Donley and David, both of whom were in the early ‘80s Chicago art-punk band, ‘DA!’. They fell in love and decided to start another band inspired by the music they first fell in love with — ’60s pop, garage, glam and power pop.

David recruited long-time friend and guitar whiz, Joe Haynes, to play lead guitar. With Mike Ebersohl on drums, the band recorded with legendary producer and engineer, Timothy Powell in 1988. That summer, they hit the Chicago streets, playing numerous shows and exciting Northside audiences with their new sound.

By late 1988, The Veil changed drummers, enlisting Andy Wahl, and recorded a five-song EP produced by Jeff Murphy, of the band, ‘Shoes’. The band was hoping to attract a major label. Unfortunately, in 1989, Lorna and David’s relationship ended, as did The Veil. The music sat on a shelf for nearly three decades until, in 2018, David dumped his collection of cassette tapes at a thrift store. I visited that store soon after and bought every tape.

Partnering with David and using the master tapes from both recording sessions, we selected a 10-song sequence we feel best represents the band. Tragically, Lorna passed away in 2013. She always believed in The Veil’s music and felt her musical vision with David deserved to be heard by a wider audience.

Lorna Donley was a fixture in the Chicago music scene for more than 15 years, beginning at the age of 17. She was a poet, singer, bassist and artist. I am honored to share this lost work with you and shed greater light on Lorna Donley.

I know once you listen to the music, you will understand why, when I heard those dusty old cassettes tapes for the first time, I had to make this record.
