Formed in 1989 in Essex, whilst still at school, Disco Inferno was originally the four-piece of Ian Crause (vocals/guitar), Paul Willmott (bass), Rob Whatley (drums), and Daniel Gish (keyboards). Following a run of early gigs and the departure of Gish (who'd later join peers Bark Psychosis), they landed a deal with London-based independent Che and left their first physical traces in 1991 with the release of three records - a 7" ('Entertainment' / 'Arc In Round'), album ('Open Doors, Closed Windows') and 12" ('Science'), all of which were later compiled on 'In Debt' (Cheree, 1995). With a neat instrumental equality, across these early recordings DI forged a restrained but fluid, melodic post-punk sound drawing on The Durutti Column, Wire, The Cure, early U2, and an avowed Joy Division obsession. Propulsive, fantastically inventive drumming, a glistening web of digitally delayed guitar lines, meandering bass and Crause's distinctive, understated vocals witnessed a teenaged band shaping itself, testing parameters and hitting occasional highs, without really hinting at the brilliance to come.
